Corona obliges, this year’s Monitoring Committee took place online, but it was no less successful!
Despite the current difficult situation, the TERMINAL project has managed to make substantial progress in 2020, and the INTERREG project manager, Mrs Arnould, was very pleased to congratulate the consortium.
With the acquisition of two test vehicles, an important project milestone has been reached and preparations for the operational phase are in full swing.

At the IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC) in Los Angeles, Raphael Frank and his colleague presented JUNIOR «A Research Platform for Connected and Automated Driving» from the University of Luxembourg an won the Best Poster Award.

This was the motto of the day of the open test field in Merzig.
Together with the Research Group for Traffic Telematics (FGVT) of htw saar the district town Merzig gave citizens the opportunity to experience this live. In the course of test drives, interested parties could experience at first hand how intelligent transport systems contribute to the improvement of efficiency in road traffic and road safety.

The 10×6 Mobility Conference organized by Paperjam in the Escher Theater on September 18, 2019 gave 10 experts the opportunity to present their vision of better transportation to improve the quality of life, for more sustainability and a strong economy. One of them was the use of electric automated minibuses for commuter transport in border regions.
Professor Thomas Bousonville talked about the ambitious goals of the project TERMINAL and the related actions that htw saar wants to carry out together with its operational partners in order to enable commuters in the Greater Region to experience better mobility in the future.

Luxembourg Trade and Invest has completed a video presenting the cross-border test field. It presents all the advantages of this unique location for researchers and companies in the field of smart mobility and 5G connectivity. One sequence is dedicated to the TERMINAL project.

Professor Horst Wieker accepted the invitation of the agency INSPIRE METZ, which, in cooperation with the World Trade Center Metz-Saarbrücken and BEHR Consulting, had organized a panel discussion on the «Mobility of the Future». The event took place during the week «Metz est wunderbar», to which German and French politicians, researchers and entrepreneurs from the vehicle and transport industry were invited.
In the Grand Salon of Metz City Hall, speakers were able to present alternative mobility concepts and solutions for the future to a lay audience. Whether electric buses, automated and connected shuttles in public transport or autonomous vehicles for private use – the discussion made it clear that the mobility of the future will pursue several objectives and will not be single-track.
Less CO2 emissions through electric or hydrogen drives are conceivable. But also concepts such as car sharing, bicycle rental in inner cities and autonomous vehicles can be a response to congested roads and lack of mobility offers in rural areas.
On the subject of autonomous driving, Professor Horst Wieker was able to share his experiences with the audience and, on the basis of the TERMINAL project, to make it clear what opportunities a self-propelled bus can offer in rural areas and how progress in research is increasing public confidence in intelligent transport systems.

High notables yesterday in Schengen.
Transport ministers from Germany, France, Luxembourg and Saarland met to officially open the cross-border test field for autonomous and connected driving in the border triangle. The first transnational test field is intended to serve industry and research alike to test application scenarios and new technologies across borders on all types of roads.
Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CDU) said at the starting signal for the trinational test field: «The mobility of the future begins now – and we are right in the middle of it».
Anke Rehlinger, Saarland’s Minister of Transport, was also present and said: «Mobility only makes sense if it works across borders. On the test field we are testing groundbreaking steps on the way to smart mobility concepts». She also expects a lot from the innovations in autonomous driving: «The results will help us to better align the conditions in cross-border public transport with the needs of the customers».

New opportunity for the TERMINAL project to introduce itself to the stakeholders of the Greater Region: At the launch event of the 17th Presidency at the summit of the Greater Region on March 25th 2019, TERMINAL was represented as an exhibitor at the «Market of Opportunities» in the Foyer of the Saarländischer Rundfunk.
